Sia Reveals Her Songwriting Process & Reject Tracks For Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry & Adele
Sia is well-known for writing some of the biggest tracks for your favorite pop artists (as well as herself) — but more often than not many of her written tracks don’t see the light of day. Hence her forthcoming This Is Acting LP, which is filled with songs that were ultimately rejected by big-name singers.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Aussie artist reveals which tracks were for certain pop ladies as well as the lengthly songwriting process. “It’s really just hit or miss, and I think the reason I’m pretty successful is actually because I’m really productive, not necessarily that I’m a great songwriter. I think I’m a good curator, so I know how to choose tracks that feel like they’re anthemic, or that seem to have an uplifting quality in the chorus,” Sia explains.
She also reveals that two of the album tracks (“Reaper” and “Cheap Thrills”) were for Rihanna (the singer apparently didn’t show up for the session) and that Katy Perry was a bit hard to work with. “She’s also quite dominant, and she’s extremely analytical. I actually quit within the first hour of our first session. I was like, ‘Can we both agree this doesn’t work? Like our whole songwriting dynamic?’ she told the magazine.
Other gems unveiled throughout the interview is that Beyonce runs her songwriting sessions like a camp and that Sia felt insecure about working alongside Adele for her 25 record.
