Cyndi Lauper Covers Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas,” Announces 2016 Country Album ‘Detour’

Cyndi Lauper always comes at the festive season from a unique angle. The enduring diva’s 1998 Xmas album includes offbeat gems like “Christmas Conga” and “Minnie And Santa,” while her 2008 duet with The Hives, “A Christmas Duel,” was a biting argument set to a rock and roll beat. As such, the 62-year-old’s gloriously sullen interpretation of Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas” (due December 11) is a fitting addition to her seasonal oeuvre. Listen to it here.

The “True Colors” hitmaker also announced that she’s putting the finishing touches on a country album called Detour. The opus, which was recorded in Nashville, is comprised of covers of classic country songs from the 1950s and ’60s. It also boasts collaborations with a number of as-yet unnamed superstars. Could Dolly feature among them? Cyndi certainly does a stellar job with the diva’s Best Little Whorehouse In Texas anthem.
