On Christmas Day, The Weeknd released not one, but two surprise collaborations for free on SoundCloud. “Low Life,” featuring Future and produced by Metro Boomin, is an erotic thriller of a song, where Atlanta strip club Follies becomes the setting for an orgy and both artists sound as depraved as ever (“Bitch I’m on my own time“). And on a remix to Jeremih‘s elated Late Nights weed anthem “Pass Dat,” the fellow R&B singer adds a verse where he insists that he hasn’t changed: “I double my cup like the mixtape days.”

These songs are a fitting end to the bizarre 2015 that The Weeknd has had. This once-anonymous critical darling scored blockbuster hits by channeling Michael Jackson (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “In the Night”) but also with songs darker than “Dirty Diana” ever was (“The Hills”). He also worked with pop wunderkind Max Martin without relinquishing all creative control, and somehow performed at the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and The Voice finale. This was all proof that he could achieve pop superstardom while maintaining the (largely) same POV from his mixtape days and, yes, free SoundCloud releases.
