Big Sean scored one of rap’s biggest selling debut weeks in 2015 with his third album, Dark Sky Paradise. He also landed BET Hip Hop Awards and an MTV Video Music Award, not to mention 2015’s biggest co-sign from the woman who singlehandedly saved the NBA, Riley Curry. To celebrate, the one-time Kanye West protege has dropped the surprise track “What a Year,” featuring Pharrell and Detail.
The Detroit rapper goes beyond listing sales numbers in this song that flows like a stream of conscious. Instead, he reassesses the company he keeps. He sounds elated to be part of music’s winners circle (Rihanna, Jay Z, Mike WiLL Made It). He resolves to stop and dating crazy, lazy or greedy women, though, like a true grown-up, he doesn’t name names. Moreover, he honors his late grandmother and brags of paying off his family’s debts in full. Listen below.
