On January 9, Madonna appeared at the Sean Penn & Friends: Help Haiti Home gala in Beverly Hills, which raised $7 million for the Haitian victims of the 2010 7.0 earthquake. She and Sean Penn were married from 1985 to 1987, sparking controversy amid reports of alleged assault, though Madonna spoke about her ex-husband as if they’d never split.

“It’s a privilege and an honor for me to be here, period,” she said, before she performed a ukulele cover of Edith Piaf‘s “La Vie en rose” (below). “So I want to say, Sean, that I loved you from the moment that I laid eyes on you — and I still love you just the same. I just wish you would stop smoking so many cigarettes.”

Madonna spoke and performed on behalf of Sean, amid rumors that they had gotten back together. (They even held hands.)

Last month the pop icon stated that, despite what The Seattle Times reported in 1991, Sean had never “struck me, ‘tied me up’ or physically assaulted me.” This court declaration was for a $10 million lawsuit Sean filed against  Empire director Lee Daniels, for characterizing him as an abuser in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Prior to that in September, Sean caught the second night of Madonna’s Rebel Heart World Tour; he had recently split and broken off his engagement with actress Charlize Theron.
