Whissell set the bar high with her debut single. Really, really high. A bluesy swamp-pop experiment with a menacing chorus, “Get Free” showcased the Florida singer/songwriter’s southern style and deep, whiskey-drenched vocals. It’s a hard act to follow, but she proves up to the challenge with “Mine” — a strikingly beautiful ballad that explores matters of the heart without succumbing to sappiness or cliche.

“Some people never find love this, some people do but don’t realize it,” Lauren Whistle (her real name) sings over a sparse drum and piano arrangement. “But I see you, I know a good man ain’t easy to find, so I’m holding onto mine.” There’s a richness and gravity to the 26-year-old’s vocal that sets this apart from your average love song.

Whissell started writing songs in college and landed a publishing deal with Dr. Luke’s Prescription Songs soon after moving to Nashville. We’re excited to premiere “Mine” below.
