The Pet Shop Boys have consistently remained one of the most sophisticated acts in the popular music arena for the past three decades, and the first single from upcoming album Super (out April 1) doesn’t betray any signs of them gliding off track at all. With “The Pop Kids,” we get a vivid story set in the early 1990s of a pair of friends who attended the same university in London just so they could have access to the music scene. All of this, of course, is set over a glorious, retro-sounding house track.

Come for that beautifully hypnotic melody with this one, and stay for the classic spoken bit by Neil Tennant during the middle breakdown.

“The Pop Kids,” along with the rest of Super, was produced by Stuart Price. The track is available now on iTunes, while a full digital bundle featuring remixes and b-sides is due out on March 18.
