Cyndi Lauper Details “Dirty” Country Album

Cyndi Lauper is pulling a reverse Taylor Swift with her upcoming country album Detour, and the ’80s pop icon recently sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the thinking behind the unexpected release.

“I wanted the beat to be dirty and sexy,” she says of the LP. “It was supposed to be a mix of R&B and country.” Diverging from her pop roots, the singer recruited the likes of Jewel, Tony Brown and Vince Gill to carve out her new sound.

For an artist so closely associated with the early days of MTV and ’80s pop, country music seems like a radical departure. But with songs like “She’s So Unusual,” a curveball like this fits right in with her career arc.

Detour, Lauper’s 11th studio album, will be released on May 6. Until then, hear new single “Funnel Of Love” below.
