Fans supporting Kesha projected the words "Drop Dr. Luke" onto Sony headquarters.

When Kesha was refused an injunction that would allow her to sever ties with Dr. Luke and Kemosabe Records, Ariana Grande was among the first celebrities to speak up. In a new interview with Carson Daly for 97.1 AMP Radio, she explained why she felt compelled to speak up immediately: To her, Kesha’s case is yet another example of how female artists suffer from music industry sexism.

“The incredible double standards that we face on a daily basis in the industry and just in the world, it’s shocking,” Ariana says. “[P]ardon me if this comes across as sexist, but I don’t think a male artist would be in the same position right now, sorry.

“If I’m speaking out on something that I’m passionate about, I’m willing to take the brunt for fighting for what I believe in. And my fellow women are definitely something that I will always be one of the first to speak up about.”

Ariana first spoke out against such sexism last year, in a case with much lower stakes. She had recently broken up with Big Sean and was rumored to be dating Niall Horan. “I’m Ariana Grande — and if that’s not interesting enough, don’t talk to me,” she said in a tour vlog, before she expanded on her views on Twitter: “i know y’all already know this but the double standard and misogyny are still ever present.”

Meanwhile, Kesha still owes Kemosabe Records four more albums. Hear what Ariana has to say below.
