Empress Of had our second-favorite alt-pop album of 2015 with Me, a collection of pristine electro-pop productions paired with surprisingly cerebral lyrics about sex and sexism and inequality and insecurity. And now Empress Of (real name Lorely Rodriguez) returns with “Woman Is A Word,” a woozy, cowbell-laden leftover from the Me sessions that gives her politicized pop a laser-focus on identity politics.

“One word can have so much social implication, standard, limitation, qualification that it doesn’t give a person their own opportunity to really choose their identity,” she explains. “I wrote ‘Woman Is A Word’ at a time when I felt like the word ‘woman’ put me in a box of things I was capable to do, things that defined me that didn’t necessarily define me.”
