Pop Perspective: Iggy Azalea's "Team"

Iggy Azalea has spoken out against homophobia in hip-hop since the days of her 2014 debut The New Classic. Now, she is about to show her support for the LGBTQ community in a big way. PEOPLE reports that she and Z100 host Elvis Duran will be the guests of honor at the 2016 Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade on April 10.

This news is proof of how much can change over a year. Last summer, Iggy received so much backlash after she was announced as headliner for Pittsburgh’s Pridefest, that she canceled her appearance and Nick Jonas replaced her. Over 300 people were willing to protest Iggy’s set because of homophobic tweets that she sent from way before “Fancy,” along with more general complaints that Pridefest, founded by two trans women of color, had become a “white, cis, gay man’s event.”

Meanwhile, in a statement for PEOPLE, the “Team” rapper stressed her support for whoever plans to see her at Miami Beach Gay Pride. “It’s such an important day to celebrate with my LGBTQ fans, and I can’t wait to see my Azaleans there!” she says.
