Troye Sivan Interview
Troye Sivan talks his debut LP, moving video trilogy and being an out pop star.

It’s all coming together for Troye Sivan. The Australian pop star’s debut LP Blue Neighbourhood is connecting with LGTBQ kids in a way that hasn’t been seen since Lady Gaga’s Born This Way and he has a veritable smash on his hands with “Youth,” which is edging ever closer to a top 20 birth on the Billboard Hot 100. (The anthemic single is currently perched at number 23). His latest coup? Posing for a suitably dreamy Out Magazine cover shoot.

In addition to serving serious face for the publication, Troye also opened up about finding his comfort zone on stage. “I’ve been looking at people’s faces a lot more during a show, and it’s been getting me insane amounts of joy,” the 20-year-old reveals. “I see kids closing their eyes and singing the lyrics, and I see kids with huge smiles on their faces, or I see kids that are on a date. I see kids who are proud of themselves and proud of me, and it just really makes me happy.”

One track that gets a particularly strong reaction is “Heaven,” a rumination on the occasionally onerous task of balancing homosexuality with religion. “Writing that song was very therapeutic to me at the time,” he confides. “It was me thinking about how hard I try to be a good person and then feeling like, before I even opened my eyes as a little baby — because I think I was born gay — I was a sinner. All of those are very standard, but very confusing and hurtful conversations that you have to have with yourself as an LGBTQ person.” Watch Troye perform the song live below.
