Kesha Announces She’s Been Offered Deal For Freedom From Kemosabe In Exchange For Giving A Public Apology (Which She Refused)

Kesha doesn’t appear to be open to cutting any deals when it comes to untangling herself from her contract with Dr. Luke and Sony’s Kemosabe Records.

The singer dropped a bombshell on Instagram on Sunday (April 3) afternoon when she posted an update that states, “so. I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie. I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors.”

Kesha made it clear, however, that such an offer is unacceptable. “I will not take back the TRUTH,” she added on the photo-sharing social platform. “I would rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again.”

UPDATED: Dr. Luke’s team provided a statement on the matter to Rolling Stone, which you can read below.

Following Kesha’s Instagram post, a spokesperson for Dr. Luke said the following in a statement to Rolling Stone: “The Court repeatedly stated Kesha is already free to record without Dr. Luke, and that she had not presented any facts supporting her claims.  That’s because all the evidence – including Kesha’s own videotaped sworn testimony – show her allegations are false. The only thing Kesha is not free to do is to continue to lie about Dr. Luke through publicity stunts and outrageous smears, ignoring the fact that by her own free will she went to work and entered into new contracts with Dr. Luke years after this ‘incident’ supposedly happened. Her goal all along has been solely personal enrichment by seeking to break contracts that brought her success and millions so she can enter into more lucrative ones.  We look forward to our day in court holding Kesha accountable for her lies.”

In February, a New York Supreme Court judge denied Kesha an injunction to sever ties from Dr. Luke and his Sony subsidiary Kemosabe Records. The following month, Kesha filed paperwork to have an appeals court re-examine that same decision. It’s just the latest event in the twisted saga that began in 2014 when Kesha named the producer (whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald) as an alleged physical and emotional abuser throughout her working career with him. She still owes Kemosabe four more albums, per her contract. Kesha’s last release was 2012 LP Warrior.

Fellow pop hit-maker Lady Gaga has been standing by Kesha during her legal battle. “This is an almost-30-year-old woman who’s a musician and an incredible talent,” Gaga told Carson Daly during a March interview. “In any other business, if you were to report that anything happened to you to the, you know, human resources department, it would be dealt with. But we don’t have a human resources department; we don’t have a union as artists. We’re just fighting for ourselves. We have these huge obstacles against us, and if we don’t stick together, our voices just won’t be heard.”

As the legal battle continues, Kesha let fans know recently that she’s been keeping busy by working on new music. Kesha is also set to make an appearance in an upcoming episode of ABC series Nashville.

Seems like several folks are going to need to duck for cover when her inevitable tell-all memoir comes out, though.
