Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” Becomes The Girl Group’s First Top 10 Single

See, you should always listen Idolator! In February, when “Work From Home” premiered, we pegged it as the single having the potential to help Fifth Harmony break through in a big way. Six weeks later, here we are with the girl group having cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the very first time. (It’s currently at #10.)

It’s hard to believe, but last year’s hit single “Worth It” just missed making the Top 10, having peaked at #12 (despite being certified triple-Platinum by the RIAA). In fact, “Work From Home” is only 5H’s third Top 40 single overall, the first of which was vastly underrated dance-pop gem “Sledgehammer.” That one ultimately peaked at #40.

Since the  1990s and early ’00s heydays when TLC, Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child ruled the charts, girl groups have had varying results when trying to crack the US market. The most successful of the lot was Pussycat Dolls, who released two Platinum-selling albums and landed four singles in the Top 10 between 2005 and 2008. Other acts like Danity Kane and G.R.L. came and went without making much of a dent in the mainstream — the former managed to get two songs into the Top 10, “Show Stopper” (#8 in 2006) and “Damaged” (#10 in 2008), while the latter only made it onto the charts briefly, as a feature on Pitbull‘s  2014 single “Wild Wild Love.”

For now, the whole “work from home” concept seems to be working for Fifth Harmony. And who knows — maybe this is a the first in a long streak of smashes for America’s new favorite girl group?
