Prince Dead At 57
Legendary pop star Prince has died at age 57. We reflect on his incredible impact.

While the death of David Bowie was a terrible surprise, the unexpected passing of Prince is a violet shock. The purple legend was comparatively young at 57 and looked typically vital in recent months. He also remained prolific to the end, dropping two albums in 2015 (HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two). It’s going to take a long time to process this loss, but perhaps we can start by reflecting on the Minneapolis native’s vast and brilliant legacy.

Prince was already a star by the late 1970s thanks to a string of highly innovative and highly controversial albums. However, his imperial phase began with the release of fifth LP 1999 in 1983. It spawned two top 10 hits and laid much of the groundwork for Purple Rain — the pop pioneer’s seminal album, which sold 13 million copies and houses enduring classics like “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” Click through our gallery of the hitmaker’s 19 top 10 singles up top.
