2015’s breakout rapper Fetty Wap wasn’t always as popular as he is now. For several reasons, he felt like an outsider during his high school days in New Jersey — something the 24-year-old MC conveys both in pot-hazy, school-themed new single “Wake Up” and the song’s accompanying letter from Fetty to his fans.

“This song is for everyone that celebrates 4/20 all year but still passes that math test,” Fetty says in the letter, which you can read in full below. “This song is for everyone that might not be in the top of their class or most popular but you still know where you’re headed, just riding on your own path. I can tell you from experience that if you really put your heart and effort into achieving your goals, you won’t walk away empty handed. You’ll make it.”

Other than “Wake Up,” there is no news on a follow-up LP to last year’s Fetty Wap, though a press release states that the rapper is “currently working on [his] sophomore album.”
