Ellen DeGeneres took time to remember one of the guests from the very first season of her talk show: Prince. In a segment that airs today, the daytime diva talked about the late musician coming onto the set in 2003, and what that meant to her as she was starting out with a new series.

“You have to understand, it’s a big deal because most stars wait to see if a talk show is going to be successful. They wait to see if it’s a cool thing to do before they say yes,” Ellen says in the above clip. “So he did it in the first season and it meant the world to me that he did that.”

Ellen, a longtime fan of Prince — she held up the vinyl copy of his first album that she bought way back in 1978! — then showed a bit of her 2003 interview with the singer, as well as his performance of his classic hit “Kiss.”
