Broadway history has just been made, as Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers, Hamilton, earned 16 Tony nominations. That surpasses previous record-setters The Producers and Billy Elliot, which each scored 15 nominations in 2001 and 2009, respectively. Previously, Hamilton won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

Hamilton was nominated in all the big Tony Award categories this year: Best Leading Actor In A Musical (Leslie Odom Jr.), Best Leading Actress In A Musical (Phillipa Soo), Best Original Score (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the biggie, Best New Musical. The production will face off against Bright Star, School Of Rock and Waitress for the latter award.
