Sixteen-year-old Maisy Kay is on the cusp of breaking out big in 2016. Based in Los Angeles — and having already won an ASCAP Award — the UK-born singer-songwriter will release her debut EP, Disguises, on July 15, and the title track is an uplifting and instantly memorable ballad punctuated by piano chords, strings and Kay’s tender vocal delivery.

That said, “Disguises,” as Maisy explains, comes with an added sense of poignancy, given the song’s background.

“Writing ‘Disguises came about during a supremely pivotal moment in my journey as an artist and as a person, which is why I decided to name the EP after the song itself,” the singer tells Idolator. “Besides loving how the song came out, ‘Disguises’ is very special to me due in large part to one of my co-writers, Jason Gaviati. Gavi is an incredible writer and performer who passed away last year after battling Burkitts Lymphoma. I will always remember how excited he got when we were writing this song, as it was one of his favourites that we did together. If you listen carefully, you can hear his voice on the track singing background vocals, which makes it even more meaningful. It brings constant comfort knowing I will always have a special part of Gavi right there in the song and I hope that it serves as a continued memorial to the incredible legacy that he left behind. A legacy that includes all of the people he touched and all of the incredible music he wrote.”
