Last night (May 22), Madonna paid tribute to the late funk legend Prince at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. The performance – which consisted of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Purple Rain,” and a surprise cameo by Stevie Wonder – has been the subject of much controversy and received mixed reviews by the show’s end.

In response, the pop star took to Instagram to defend her homage to the Purple One.

“Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age gender or skin color,” she wrote in one of the photo captions. “If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever.”
