During the Billboard Music Awards, BET tweeted a video plugging its own BET Awards on June 26. “Yeah we saw that. Don’t worry. We got you,” the ad says, referring to Madonna‘s own tribute to Prince. (The timing was brutal, as the BBMAs performance had just aired.)

Now a week later, after having already addressed the haters at large, Madonna has fired back at BET. Today (May 29) she posted a throwback pic of herself, while apparently wearing a gift from the late artist himself. “Wearing the jacket Prince gave me back in the day without permission from BET. . lol! God Bless America,” she says.

According to Billboard Music Awards producer Mark Bracco, Madonna’s BBMAs tribute to Prince was her own idea.

“Honestly her team gave a call and inquired about what we might be thinking about and it led to many conversations about what would she want to do and how would we want to shape it creatively,” Bracco said to the Associated Press. “And after everyone (got) comfortable with exactly what the direction was, we all collectively wanted to go to Madonna, that she would do this and she has been very, very involved in how this will all unfold creatively.”

But Madonna’s involvement is why Prince fans launched a Change.org petition in protest. What they wanted was for the BBMAs to get other artists involved, those who either bear more of his influence or worked directly with him throughout his career. For instance, according to keyboardist Doctor Fink, no one at the BBMAs had asked Prince’s band the Revolution to get involved.
