UPDATE (4:05 p.m. ET): The medical examiner in the case released a one-page autopsy report revealing Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose. The AP reports that the examination describes fentanyl as “a powerful opioid painkiller that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin.” Based on the findings, Prince administered the drug himself, but a criminal investigation into how he acquired the drug and which doctors prescribed it is ongoing.

Prince died of an opioid overdose, a law enforcement official has told The Associated Press. The AP reports that the anonymous official is “close to the investigation.”

Official results of the toxicology report have not been released as of this writing, but the autopsy found that Percocet — the prescription painkiller which contains the opioid oxycodone — was in his system. A Percocet overdose was likewise the reported cause for Prince’s emergency landing five days before his April 21 death.

We’ll update the story as more details become available.
