Matt Cardle Has Nothing To Do With The Ed Sheeran “Photograph” Lawsuit, He’ll Have You Know

There’s no bad blood between Matt Cardle and Ed Sheeran — at least not on Cardle’s side — despite the current copyright lawsuit involving their respective songs “Amazing” and “Photograph.”

“Please read news articles closely,” 2010 X Factor UK winner Cardle tweeted today. “This is not my lawsuit. I think @edsheeran is a genius & 100% deserves all his success.”

News came this week that the writers of Cardle’s 2012 single “Amazing,” Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, have enlisted attorney Richard Busch, noted for representing Marvin Gaye’s family in the “Blurred Lines” case, and sued Sheeran to the tune of $20 million for the resemblance “Photograph” bears to their composition.

“The songs’ similarities reach the very essence of the work,” reads the lawsuit. “The similarities go beyond substantial, which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement, and are in fact striking. The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody, and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that ‘Photograph’ copies ’Amazing.’”

Cardle’s single peaked at #84 on the UK chart in 2012. Sheeran’s Brit Award-nominated “Photograph” made it to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the States last year, and #15 in the UK.

You can listen to both songs here and make up your own mind on their similarities (or lack thereof).
