Adam Lambert Clarifies Orlando Shooting Comment

Adam Lambert has clarified comments he made following the horrific Orlando nightclub shooting over the weekend. Lambert was one of many musicians to speak out about the violent attack, and his reaction Monday (June 13) was one of the more nuanced ones, as he pointed out how the shooting landed at the nexus of gun control, terrorism, and LGBTQ issues and that it transcends political affiliations.

“The horrible tragedy in Orlando is BOTH a terrorism AND gun control issue. It is also a horrendous hate crime. It sickens me to see commentary in my own feed of people arguing over how to classify or politicize it,” he wrote. “This is not a democratic or republican issue. This is not just an LGBTQ issue. This is a HUMAN issue.”

It’s that “arguing” part that seems to have caused him to revise his original remarks. According to Digital Spy, Lambert initially shared that same post but it read “This is not an LGBTQ issue” (missing the “just”). If you read his whole statement, it’s pretty clear what he was getting at, that this despicable act is a complex tangle that is bigger than any one issue or political angle. Not to mention the context: Lambert is one of the most vocal gay rights advocates in all of pop culture so of course he wouldn’t brush off the homophobic motivations of the killer in this case. But this being Twitter, nuance gets lost, so he apparently cleaned up the post to leave no gray area.

Immediately following news of the shooting on Sunday, Lambert posted “#GunControlNow.”
