Phantogram Hit Hard With “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”: Listen
In advance of their forthcoming album Three, Phantogram have released a new single “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” via Zane Lowe‘s Beats 1 Radio show. The track comes as the official follow-up to the duo’s 2015 Big Grams album with Outkast‘s Big Boi.
Produced by Ricky Reed (who has penned songs for Meghan Trainor, Jason Derulo and Pitbull), the track is the very definition of “contained chaos.” And I mean that in the best way. The melody switches between blustering moody percussion and airy pop synths, while frontwoman Sarah Barthel sings melancholic lyrics like “Nothing is fun/Not like before.”
The song also sets the mood for the rest of the album, which is largely based on the recent death of Barthel’s sister, Rebecca.
“It’s a lot more fucking boombastic and heavy,” Barthel told Pitchfork. “I think the record, to us, is about heartbreak. We’ve kind of had a tough year, so a lot of inspiration and drive came from our own experiences.”
