Beyoncé’s Co-Writer Ingrid Burley Says “Love Drought” Isn’t About Jay Z

When Lemonade dropped in April, everyone ultimately assumed that the album was about Beyoncé‘s (apparently torrid) relationship with husband Jay Z. From “Hold Up” to the now-infamous “Sorry,” the LP is saturated with supposed Jay diss tracks. But now, Beyoncé collaborator Ingrid Burley reveals that one of the songs (“Love Drought”) is actually not about the Brooklyn rapper at all. Rather, it’s about Burley’s frustration with Bey’s label Parkwood Entertainment about two years ago.

“Two of the people who were running the label at the time had lied to me and told me Beyonce wasn’t currently listening to any new music,” the Houston rapper told Genius. But four days later, Burley came to Queen B’s writing camp only to find out that the singer had given extensive notes on songs that she was interested in.

“I was so pissed,” she said. “I was just thinking as I’m looping this beat I couldn’t get out of my head the fact that they just lied to me!”

This anger is what first inspired the song’s opening lyric: “Ten times out of nine, I know you’re lying / But nine times out of ten, I know you’re trying.” The rest was history.
