Pop Perspective: Demi Lovato’s “Body Say” Rated & Reviewed

At Idolator, the editors share a passion for high-quality pop. Occasionally, our tastes align. Other times, not so much. So, in the spirit of debate (and online drama), we’ve developed a recurring feature called Pop Perspective. In a nutshell, our editors dissect a particularly noteworthy pop-happening, and give it a rating out of 10.

That way you’re getting a full spectrum of views and we can all vent. (It’s cheaper than therapy!) The latest event to be dragged under the Idolator microscope is Demi Lovato’s sexy new single “Body Say,” which arrived on Spotify last night. Is it a summer smash or does it slightly the mark? Read our thoughts below.

Rachel Sonis — 7/10

“Body Say” is a bop. Between the track’s synthy bedroom beats and Demi’s lust-lorn coos, this is perhaps the most confident we’ve seen her since “Cool For The Summer.” Also can you imagine what a good club remix of this song will do? The possibilities are endless.

Carl Williott — 5/10

The fact that this song has sparked a manufactured Twitter war between Selena and Demi fans is exactly why I have such disdain for stan culture. It has hints of “Good For You,” sure — and about a dozen other pop songs. As did “Good For You.”

As far as I’m concerned, both songs are just here to play their part in the current tired narrative that we will one day remember as the vaguely mature, emotionally flat syrupy-digital Sound Of The Mid-2010s.

Mike Wass — 7.5/10

From her fiery personality (that fucks-free Twitter feed gives me life) to those golden pipes, Demi has all the ingredients to be a great pop star. All she needs is a really big hit to reach the next level, which is easier said than done. I thought “Cool For The Summer” was going to be massive, but that particularly cherry turned out to be an acquired taste. Happily, the indefatigable diva bounces back with another radio-ready anthem that is almost painfully on-trend.

A slinky bedroom anthem with sexy lyrics and an instantly-hummable chorus, the first taste of D6 takes the best (confidence, self-empowerment and restraint) and worst (basically what Carl said) of mid-’00s pop and mashes it all together. The result isn’t exactly original, but it’s extremely catchy and a worthy female counterpoint to similar offerings from Zayn (“Pillowtalk”) and Nick Jonas (“Chains”).

AVERAGE SCORE: 6.5/10
