Shawn Mendes shines a light on domestic violence in his gritty “Treat You Better” video. Directed by Ryan Pallotta, the unsettling visual finds the 17-year-old pining for a girl stuck in an abusive relationship. He eventually takes a stand, but comes off a little (well, a lot) worse for wear after a violent confrontation with her boyfriend. It reminded me a little of Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “We Found Love” — albeit darker and with a serious message.

“Treat You Better” is the first taste of Shawn’s sophomore LP Illuminate, which drops September 23. The track has already cracked the top 40 (it recently reached a new peak of 34 on the Billboard Hot 100) and should climb a lot higher given surging airplay and download sales. If this is any indication, the Canadian is heading in a much darker direction this era. Get a taste of it above.
