M.I.A. Premieres “Go Off,” Says ‘A.I.M.’ Will Be Her Last Album
M.I.A. announced her forthcoming album A.I.M. this afternoon (it’s out September 9), and now she has premiered lead single “Go Off” on BBC Radio 1. During the subsequent chat, she dropped the bombshell that this will be her last record. (What ever happened to that massive Matahdatah visual album?)
First, the song. It’s a pretty low-key affair despite the potential pyrotechnics that could happen when teaming up with Skrillex and her ΛΛΛYΛ collaborator Blaqstarr. Some of Skrillex’s signature helium melodies drift in and out, while M.I.A. spends most of the song casually rapping. It’s no “Bad Girls,” but then it’s not trying to be.
As for the album, M.I.A. says “it’s got mad people coming together on it” and that it’s her “cleanest” record.
“It’s my last record, so I just want it to be happy, and there’s no complaints on it,” she explained. “I want time to go and do some other stuff. I’m sure I’ll put music out and make music, but as an album it kind of just came together. I started making it after I made ‘Borders,’ and it just seemed to write itself very quickly.”
We can expect a “Go Off” video at some point, which will be devoid of people: “I am not messing with human beings right now.” Seems like a solid life strategy these days, tbh.
