Several reports having been flying around the British press over the past 24 hours that Geri Horner (née Halliwell), Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown — aka three-fifths of the Spice Girls — have recorded a new track called “Song For Her.” (So far, Melanie Chisholm and Victoria Beckham are sitting this one out.)

“The trio have already been secretly working away in the studio, and I’ve been sent a leaked demo of their first track as a threesome, called Song For Her,” wrote The Sun‘s Dan Wootton on July 13. “While the girls are still perfecting the tune and crafting other new material, the early version already sounds incredible.”

The publication also claims the group’s new music will be released as Spice Girls, rather than under the previously announced name GEM.

Interestingly, and perhaps not un-related, Spice Girls producer Eliot Kennedy, who co-wrote the act’s early hit “Say You’ll Be There” and had been recording new material with them, found that his laptop was stolen from a London hotel last week.

Given all this, Emma Bunton explained on the Heart FM Breakfast show this morning that “Song For Her” will not be released as a single. “You know, us girls love creating stuff,” she said, as noted by Digital Spy. “We went and had a laugh in the studio. It’s not a single, it’s just we were creating. It’s just a demo and somehow it has got out there.”

Friday (July 15) marks 20 years since the Spice Girls’ debut single “Wannabe” topped the UK chart. The global smash followed suit in the US seven months later, when it began a four-week run at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1997.

As for now, who knows when we’ll actually get to hear some Spice-y new tunes? Until that happens, check out the Girls’ classic ballad “2 Become 1” below.
