Three Million People Are Still Watching Psy’s “Gangnam Style” Video Every Day
Once upon a time, in a different world, long before the charts would factor in streaming, back when Donald Trump was known as a reality show blowhard and nothing more, Psy‘s “Gangnam Style” became the first video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. Now, four years after it appeared online, the video has racked up 2.6 billion views, making it the most popular video in the history of YouTube. As for why we’re even discussing this right now, it’s because somehow, someway, it’s still averaging 3 million views per day! In 2016 the year of our Lorde!
Forbes dug into the numbers, showing just how much pull this thing has. It routinely outperforms current hits by huge stars. This week, it’s the 15th most popular video, ahead of stuff like “Sorry” and “M.I.L.F. $.” In fact, Forbes basically concludes that “with weekly play counts in the tens of millions” “Gangnam Style” may not ever be dethroned as YouTube’s all-time leader.
Why tho? Is it like a “Baby’s first viral video” thing, where it’s a rite of passage of every tween to come across this thing, the same way every pre-internet tween heard that rumor that Marilyn Manson portrayed Paul in The Wonder Years?
Of all the viral videos, why is this The One? Revisit it and maybe you can figure that out.
