Shawn Mendes has released his new ditty  “Three Empty Words,” the third single off his forthcoming sophomore album Illuminate.

Here, Mendes opts for an acoustic sound as he laments over fading love. “We’re going through the motions ’cause we can’t fix what’s broken/ And I know it’s gonna hurt/ But darling I’ll go first/ Cause I won’t keep on saying those three empty words,” he croons over a poignant guitar-driven melody. The track is all-too reminiscent of John Mayer‘s “Heart Of Life,” perhaps showing a more mature era for the singer-songwriter.
