M.I.A. features an unexpected collaboration in her new, and possibly last, album AIM. She tells Entertainment Weekly that she teamed with Zayn Malik, as in the ex-One Direction member, for a song called “Freedun.”

“We just basically did it while I was here,” M.I.A. said, calling from India, “because I’ve been here for a week-and-a-half. We’ve just been going back and forth on, you know, WhatsApp.”

Their working relationship actually dates back to Zayn’s solo debut Mind Of Mine, when she considered but ultimately passed on writing a song for it. But both artists do have the same publishers, which made connecting easy.

“We had a couple people in common,” she says to EW. “And that’s how it came about. I didn’t really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him.”

AIM is out September 9.
