The Weeknd‘s music has never been particularly “conscious”—  unless you consider his oeuvre a commentary on recreational drug use, fame and hookup culture — but outside of his art, he’s been actively voicing his opinion on social issues in recent months. Earlier this year, he and Belly canceled their Kimmel performance because they wouldn’t share a stage with Donald Trump, and in July he tweeted in support of Black Lives Matter and against the police after the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. For his latest statement, the Canadian star put his money where his mouth is by donating a hefty sum to Black Lives Matter.

According to The Fader, The Weeknd donated $250,000 to the BLM network. This would be one of the most high profile Black Lives Matter contributions from the music industry since Jay Z and Tidal gave the movement $1.5 million. The news comes just days after he gave $50,000 to the University of Toronto’s Ethiopic Studies program.
