It’s never easy to make the transition from teen-pop sensation to adult artist — harder still when you completely overhaul your sound in the process. But that’s the magic trick that Brigit Mendler pulls off with new single “Atlantis.” The 23-year-old, who landed a platinum-selling hit with “Ready Or Not” in 2012, veers away from the bubblegum pop of her debut LP in favor of hazy, lo-fi electronica. “Deep underwater that’s where I left my love,” she coos at the beginning of the song. “Clean at the surface shallow to the touch.” The only misstep is an unnecessary verse from Orlando rapper, Kaiydo.

So what’s it all about? “In getting this song to its full expression, I had to ask myself a lot of questions that I haven’t before,” Bridgit reveals. “‘Atlantis’ is about knowing that I am capable of finding love, but feeling like it has disappeared like a lost city. I wanted to set a haunting tone to the lyrics because the song captures a very tumultuous and transformative time in my life. This song really takes ownership of that.” Listen to the former Disney diva’s new single below.
