Lady Gaga Announces Florence Welch Duet, Sings “2 Become 1” With Emma Bunton

Today wasn’t a bad one to wake up to for Lady Gaga fans. First up is, of course, the diva’s long-awaited new pop single — er, make that pop-rock single? — “Perfect Illusion,” which has quite predictably topped the iTunes chart within hours of its release. And now all the news from her morning co-hosting gig with Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1 in the UK is rippling around.

One big takeaway from Gaga’s chat: She’s got a collaboration with Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine fame, naturally) coming on her new album.

“Me and Florence Welch did a duet together,” Gaga said on-air. “I started to work on an idea for a song that I really wanted to do with a girl. You’ll see why when you see what the song is about.”

Why Florence, you might ask? “I just thought, ‘Who do I want to sing with?’ She’s really to me, if not the best, one of the greatest vocalists in the world. She’s incredible.” So there you have it.

Another great moment came when Gaga and Heart FM Breakfast hostess Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton and Gaga belted out a few lines from Spice Girls classic “2 Become 1” — albeit with Mother Monster slyly altering the lyric “wanna make love to ya, baby” to “I’ll make love to you, Baby” — a mind-blowing mini pop event that was captured by Bunton on Instagram.

And then there was Gaga revealing that she wrote the lyrics to her brand new single “Perfect Illusion,” which was co-produced by Mark Ronson and Kevin Parker, on a good ol’ fashioned typewriter.

“Kevin flew to us from Australia and he came with this idea, that was the beginning of a song called ‘Illusion’,” she told Nick Grimshaw.”I work on a typewriter and we would bounce new lyrics back and forth. We stripped everything away. Changed the melody, shifted it. I sat at piano, Kevin was on guitar, Mark was on the bass.”

As for the meaning of the song, Gaga explained:

“I believe many of us are wondering why there are so many fake things around us. How do we navigate through social media? How do we look through these images that we know are filtered and altered, and decipher what is reality and what is a perfect illusion? There are also a lot of things on the internet that are not reality. And I think people are pressured to keep that personal illusion going on in their real lives. So this song is about raging against it and letting it go. It’s about wanting people to re-establish that human connection.”

Now you know everything there is to know. Soak it all in.
