gnash Talks "I Hate U, I Love U"
We speak to gnash about rising hit "I Hate U, I Love U" and his many collaborators.

Olivia O’Brien is shaping up to be one of 2016’s breakout stars thanks to her feature on gnash’s “I Hate U, I Love U,” which is still climbing the Billboard Hot 100. (The moody anthem is currently sitting pretty at number 22). It was only a matter of time before the 16-year-old got snapped up by a major label and her debut solo single, “Trust Issues,” arrived in August via Island Records. That track found the singer/songwriter in a particularly gloomy headspace, dropping emotional truth bombs left, right and center.

The newcomer’s latest anthem is the polar opposite. Featuring a verse from Blackbear, “Root Beer Float” is a drowsy party anthem. “I’ve been rolling, rolling with papers, wanna get high to see you later,” Olivia sings over hazy electronic production. “Pour some whiskey, feeling frisky — we should make a root beer float.” (I hope her mom doesn’t hear this!) It’s extremely catchy and shows that she’s equally adept at capturing happy vibe as introspective moments. Check it out below.
