Demi Lovato's "Cool For The Summer" gets a dark and dreamy VARA remix.

Los Angeles-based artist/producer VARA first made waves with dark and dreamy remixes of Demi Lovato’s “Cool For The Summer” and ZZ Ward’s “Love 3X,” before unleashing debut single “Break Down The Walls” earlier this year. The gloomy electro of that track sets the tone for The Shadows — his soulful, six-track EP. Highlights include “Rules Of The Game,” which was partly inspired by the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, and introspective earworm “Playing With The Pain.” The latter boasts the EP’s most instant chorus and is begging for a killer remix package.

VARA shows a flair for mashing genres on R&B/electro fusion “Your Love,” which starts off sounding like a Nine Inch Nails track before venturing into Usher territory. If you’re after something a little sexier, look no further than (unusually romantic) bedroom anthem “Skin.” This slow jam shows off the newcomer’s voice better than any other. VARA winds up the EP with “Shadows,” which finds the singer grappling with the possibility of having to live an ordinary life. Stream all six songs, which were co-produced with The Gifted, below.
