Hailee Steinfeld, Grey & Zedd’s Neon-Drenched “Starving” Video
The journey from Academy Award-nominated actress to teen-pop diva is uncharted, but Hailee Steinfeld did a good job of navigating the rocky terrain on Haiz. That EP produced top 30 hit “Love Myself” (the cute bop about masturbation) and a DNCE-assisted radio smash. However, it still felt a side-project to me. That changed with “Starving.” A summery collaboration with EDM duo Grey and Zedd, the upbeat love song is the first time I’ve thought of the 19-year-old as a pop star.
With the track shaping up to be a fall smash (it’s already top 10 on Spotify and sitting just outside the iTunes top 10), “Starving” needs a memorable video to nab those all-important YouTube views. It goes about it in a surprising traditional route — with shadowy set-ups and cute choreography. The visual is vaguely ’00s (it reminded me of Kelly Rowland’s “Work”) but there’s nothing wrong with looking pretty and busting a move. Watch the neon-drenched clip up top.
