Barcelona’s “In The Night” Is A Kaleidoscopic Synth-Pop Dream: Premiere

Barcelona is back and better than ever. Gearing up to release their forthcoming album Basic Man (out October 14), the band is giving fans a little taste of what’s in store with their lead single, “In The Night.” And we’re excited to premiere the track below.

The song is a kaleidoscopic alt-pop dream, as frontman Brian Fennell croons love-lorn lyrics amid twinkling synths. “Never gonna hold you back/ Stay here/ Even with the good goes bad,” he coos in the number’s propulsive chorus. It’s the perfect soundtrack for those quiet 3 a.m. lonely hours and perhaps even a drunken (yet endlessly cathartic) ugly cry.

So, how did the song come about? “‘In The Night’ actually started as a much slower and melancholy song,” Fennell tells us. “Turns out, most of our songs are slow and melancholy songs, so we switched gears…The verses are written fairly abstractly, while the choruses are written more like a mid-90s pop song. It’s a strange party.”

Indeed, it is. But it’s a lovely one at that.
