Eden xo’s “El Barrio”: Watch The Spacey Video

Following up with her singles “Too Cool To Dance” and “The Weekend,” Eden xo returns today with an absolute synth-pop stunner called “El Barrio.” And the track isn’t just something the singer-songwriter threw together with the intent of hitting all the right marks, commercially; it turns out there’s a personal side to the tale told in the lyrics, as well.

“I wrote ‘El Barrio’ with my friend Lil Eddie, who is brilliant,” Eden tells Idolator. “He always pushes me to get more personal. It’s a story about two people who come from different worlds and fall in love. Classic good girl meets bad boy. I know in my relationships I’m very ride or die and would do anything for my man, but It’s a little more than that because it’s partially based on my mother’s life. She ran away to Mexico and got married when she was just 19. There’s a whole story there that’s not mine to tell, but it gave me some good inspiration to draw on.”

It doesn’t hurt that the song is catchy as hell, or that it’s accompanied by a colorful, eye-popping visual, courtesy of director Clement Oberto, art director THANKYOUX and stylist Johnny Wujek.

“For the music video I wanted to do something out of the box,” Eden explains. “Anyone could have easily shot a video in East LA or something, but Clement and I thought, What if El Barrio was a distant planet? Visually, we told a story of a love so crazy that you’re willing to leave Earth to be with the someone. I was so stoked and honored to have my friend Leafar Seyer of the cholo-goth band Prayers play my lover. I think he’s such an incredible artist with amazing energy and the ideas he brought to the table were genius.”

In fact, you might have even caught Leafar and the rest of Prayers when their quirky goth cover of Pet Shop Boys‘ “West End Girls” went viral earlier this year.

Give Eden xo’s “El Barrio” video a watch above, and if you like what you see and hear, you can pick up the single from iTunes or stream it on Spotify.
