Frank Ocean Collaborator Alex G Explains His Role On ‘Blonde’

Frank Ocean‘s Endless had movie-like closing credits detailing everyone’s role on each song, but there’s still a fair amount of mystery surrounding the roles of specific collaborators on Blonde, because only some of the credits have been revealed so far. Today we learn that Alex G, who had a significant role on the visual album, also played on a couple Blonde tracks — this despite the fact that he wasn’t named in the Blonde contributor list, which just adds to the purposely muddy view Ocean is providing everyone with regarding these projects.

In an interview with Run For Cover Records, the lo-fi godhead explains he was touring in the UK when he got an email before his London show asking if he wanted to meet up with Ocean. After that, Ocean’s team would hit him up every couple of months to fly in and record more material.

“I don’t know why it happened, but that’s how it happened,” he explains. “It was cool, it was a really nice studio, everyone there was really nice. Frank is a really cool guy, I didn’t talk to him that much but he seemed like a really nice person.”

Alex confirms that he played on Blonde tracks “White Ferrari” and “Self Control.” “For ‘Self Control,’ he wrote the chords, and he was like ‘can you just play these in a different way’…And then there’s an ending part that’s not me, on ‘Self Control.’ On ‘White Ferrari’ I do the guitar at the end.”

Watch his interview below, with the Ocean talk at the 3:05 mark.
