“Shotgun” Is Rebecca & Fiona’s Best Single Since “Bullets”

For a while there it looked like Rebecca & Fiona would be one of those acts that caught lightning in a bottle with their first album (the excellent I Love You, Man) and would spend the rest of their career trying to recapture that magic. Not that the Swedish duo’s sophomore LP and subsequent singles weren’t good, they were just underwhelming by comparison. Happily, the ladies get it very right on “Shotgun” — which is easily the best track they’ve released since 2011’s “Bullets.”

What’s different this time around? After dabbling in angry electro, the Stockholm divas retreat to the glacial synth-pop of their early singles on “Shotgun.” From the production to the harmonies, there’s a degree of subtlety on display here that was missing from the Beauty Is Pain era. But that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their edge. “I know you want me to be like the others, no fighting, no needing just pretty and silent,” Rebecca & Fiona lament on the pre-chorus. “But I’m not like that I can’t hold back.”

“Shotgun” is taken from Rebecca & Fiona’s upcoming Party Hard EP, which drops November 4. Listen below.
