On Tuesday (November 1), Hailee Steinfeld stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote her forthcoming movie The Edge Of Seventeen. And in addition to talking about Woody Harrelson‘s vegan cookies and her Halloween costume, Steinfeld also revealed how she got her big break in music.

It all started when the singer attended a dinner event in New York City with her mom and Charlie Walk, the President of the Republic Records Group, happened to be sitting next to them. The three hit it off and eventually got to talking about music.

“Within 20 minutes, he had earphones and listening to music that I was playing him that I had done on my own, covers that I recorded,” she said. “And he signed me.”

But it didn’t happen right on the spot. “It was a couple of months later,” she notes. “He loves meetings, so we had a couple of meetings and then he signed me.”

Steinfeld went on to speak a bit about touring and told show host Jimmy Kimmel that a fan in Japan once said that she loved her “more than sushi.”
