Melanie Martinez Interview
We speak to Melanie about concept albums and the future travails of Cry Baby.

Melanie Martinez promised to release a video for every song on debut LP, Cry Baby, and she’s now two videos away from pulling it off. The rising pop star’s visual album nears completion with the arrival of “Pacify Her.” At this point, she only needs to film videos for “Mad Hatter” and “Mrs. Potato Head” to achieve her goal. So, what can you expect from Melanie’s latest? Well, the 21-year-old is nothing if not true to her vision with her mischievous alter-ego coming between lovestruck toddlers in the play pen. (Just go along with it).

The New York-born singer’s debut album has taken on a life of its own since arriving in August, 2015. Cry Baby debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and spent a year in the top 50. That’s even more impressive when you consider that it has only spawned one pop radio hit, the Lesley Gore-sampling “Pity Party.” Instead, Melanie has expanded her fanbase via a steady rollout of visuals and good, old-fashioned touring. The result is the kind of organic growth record labels usually only dream of. Watch Melanie’s self-directed “Pacify Her” video up top.
