Kevin Garrett On "Precious" & Beyonce
We speak to Kevin Garrett about viral hit "Precious" & writing a song for Beyonce.

Kevin Garrett has been steadily building buzz since the release of critically-acclaimed debut EP, Mellow Drama, in 2015, but he suddenly became a whole lot hotter when Beyonce asked him to write a song for Lemonade. The 25-year-old contributed album-opener “Pray You Catch Me” and then got back to work on his own music. “I’m more confident in my artistry and I have so much more to say,” he says of the experience. “I’ve been doing most of the same thing. Writing and touring and working on my music. I’m really anxious to polish what I have and write some more new music.”

The Brooklyn-based talent dropped the video for viral hit “Precious” today (November 16) and it’s a deceptively deep affair. “I wanted… to make a video that focused on self preservation but still represented the core of the song which is trying to get over a past love,” Kevin says of the Shervin Lainez-directed visual. “Hence there being minimal shots of the other character that slowly dissipate as the video progresses.” Watch the gritty, black-and-white clip, and get to know the rising star a little better, up top.
