A Tribe Called Quest Top Album Chart For The First Time In 20 Years

This week marks a bittersweet victory for A Tribe Called Quest, as the veteran hip hop act has topped the Billboard 200 with We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, their first studio album in 18 years (and possibly their final one). The achievement comes after the death of group member Phife Dawg on March 22, following the 45 year old’s battle with diabetes. Phife, whose real name was Malik Taylor, contributed to the bulk of the tracks on the LP.

Altogether, We Got It From Here moved 135,000 equivalent album units, with 112,000 of those being traditional album sales. This marks A Tribe Called Quest’s second #1 album on the main chart, following the Platinum-certified Beats, Rhymes And Life pulling off the same feat in summer 1996.

A Tribe Called Quest’s previous album, The Love Movement, was released in September 1998 and reached #3 on the chart. It has since been certified Gold.
