Many brave souls have covered Wham!‘s “Last Christmas” over the decades, and the results usually just leave listeners yearning to hear the original. Falling somewhere in surprisingly brilliant territory is Kristin Kontrol‘s rendition of the festive favorite, which the onetime Dum Dum Girls frontwoman recorded in 2013 and leaked two days ago upon the death of George Michael, while noting that she was held back from releasing the song by the powers that be.

“So sad we lost another incredible artist this year. Rest in power, George Micahel,” Kristin wrote on Facebook. “A few years ago I recorded a cover of ‘Last Christmas’ as a b-side to an Xmas original. An innocent homage out of love. This was proto-KK as produced by Kurt Feldman (Ice Choir). Was never allowed to release it but fuck it.”

Kristin’s fresh take on “Last Christmas,” which sounds just a tad Cure-esque to us, is set to private on Soundcloud, but you can head over there to listen.
