Mariah Carey Reportedly Axes Creative Director After New Year’s Eve Debacle

Someone from Mariah Carey‘s team has reportedly taken a fall for the diva’s much-discussed, televised New Year’s Eve mishap. According to Entertainment Tonight, that unlucky individual is Carey’s creative director/choreographer/dancer Anthony Burrell (pictured above, left).

The main reason for the firing of Burrell is said to be his decision to place Carey’s backup singers at the bottom of the risers instead of on stage with the “Beautiful” hit-maker during her New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance. Burrell reportedly did so without the approval of Mariah’s management team — a no-no, according to a source, since the move “left Mariah without any support,” and backup singers can help an artist with cues if their earpieces don’t work and the music can’t readily be heard.

ET points out that Burrell chose not to respond to a request for comment, but he did reply to a direct message from the site on Instagram with the thumbs-up emoji.

Below is a photo posted by Burrell in happier times — aka just three days ago — featuring himself with Carey and fellow dancer Bryan Tanaka.
