Kim Burrell Responds To Backlash
Gospel singer Kim Burrell responds to backlash over her homophobic sermon.

Gospel singer Kim Burrell triggered a major backlash on December 30 when she gave a sermon (she is also a senior pastor) railing against the “perverted homosexual spirit” at a Pentecostal church in Houston, Texas. The comments were particularly galling considering her feature on Frank Ocean’s Blonde LP and an upcoming appearance on The Ellen DeGenres Show to perform a song from the Hidden Figures soundtrack. Well, it didn’t take long for the 44-year-old to be condemned by contemporaries like Janelle Monae and Pharrell and her talk show performance was promptly cancelled.

“For those asking, Kim Burrell will not be appearing on my show,” Ellen tweeted yesterday (January 3). It now looks like there might be other consequences. Frank Ocean’s mother, Katonya Breaux, is calling for the singer to be removed Blonde. “Son, can we crop Kim Burrells voice out of your song??” she tweeted in reference to LP highlight “Godspeed.” She wasn’t quite done, however. “I mean damn. Hypocrisy and the inciting of hate pisses me off. Opportunistic &?%#€!!” While Katonya’s idea certainly has merit, surely leaving Kim’s voice on what is widely interpreted to be a gay love song is a more powerful statement? See her tweets below.
